A.P.E. brings Character Education to the fore

Students in a classroom session at the Cayon High School
Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts - Students of the third and fourth forms of the Cayon High (CHS) will get the opportunity to recognize the importance of Character, and the meaningful role it plays in bringing about a culture across Cayon and the surrounding communities to make good character the norm.

The Ambassadors for Peace and Empowerment (A.P.E.) Community Organization has  organized and will implement a Character Education symposium, under the theme, “Character is Me, Character is You.” The school-based initiative will further encourage adolescents to think before they act, understand the fundamental differences between right and wrong, and how to make informed decisions.

According to Ms. Yvette Herbert, the President of A.P.E., “the project was designed to motivate young persons to refrain from crime and its related activities, as well as, provide a platform to further empower the leaders of today to better understand what their Community and Society expects of them.”

She further added, “we recognize that our young persons are choosing many paths that lead to unemployment, unplanned families, gangs, and even imprisonment to name a few. Additionally, the lack of respect for basic virtues is causing some aspects of society to crumble, and from a youth perspective, the A.P.E. wants to reverse and change this becoming trend.”

A wide cross-section of persons from the business, social, spiritual, and educational fraternities will inspire participants to use the character principles as their personal mantras (for everyday living) through interactive thirty-(30) minute presentations. The activity will also include a rap session for open discussion and/or a question and answer session.

To complement the forum, information packages will be prepared and distributed with resource and reference materials that will act as reminders to help the students to develop and maintain positive and exemplary lifestyles.

The event will take place on Friday 29th May 2009, at the Cayon Community Centre.
