Volleyball Association teaching sport at grassroot level

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – EVEN though volleyball is lagging behind in the Federation when compared with other sports, the local fraternity is continuing with efforts to promote the game at the grassroots level.

According to member of the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Volleyball Association, St. Clair Hodge, the body, over the last several years, has started a number of programmes to engage youths in the sport.

“We have been doing a whole lot at the grassroots level. Over the last three to five years we have had grassroots programme in the schools and we have undertaken coaching programmes almost every year in the schools for teachers.”

The Association is now seeking to have a new coach to work with those interested youth outside of the regular school time, so as to further enhance their knowledge and training in the field.

Hodge noted that outside of the schools, the Association is looking at taking the development to another level, where they take the best of those juniors attending the various learning institutions and draft them into a national team training programme.

“We have done this, every year. We have also done the grass roots training and we even had a coach out of the United States Volleyball teaching us how to impart the sport to those who were willing to learn,” added Hodge.

He disclosed that a Brazilian coach is currently on island conducting training in Beach Volleyball, and is also assisting with the indoor aspect of the game.

Hodge confessed that due to poor public relations on the part of the Association, it seemed to have fallen into the doldrums, but the national team remains very active.

Just recently, the local volleyball team won its qualifying group to progress to the next round of the World Indoor Championship, with that falling silently to the ear of many in the Federation.

That team will continue with their quest to qualify the Federation in the competition when the next round gets underway in 2017, Hodge stated.

However, like with many other sporting disciplines in the Federation the Volleyball Association is complaining that it does not have a home or facility of their own which is currently hampering their progress.

The indoor players, at times, use the netball facility which is not always available due to various tournaments and practice sessions.
