Powell back in West Indies colours for Sri Lanka Tour

    BASSETTERE, St. Kitts – AFTER taking a hiatus from cricket to pursue a career in the American sport of Baseball, Nevisian-born cricketer Kieran Powell will be making a return to international duties when he tours Sri Lanka later next month.

     

    This will be the first major international competition for the 26-year-old batsman who has been embroiled in personal controversies.

    He will be part of the West Indies A team setup that would be in Sri Lanka from October 1 to November 1, according to the West Indies Cricket Board.

    In a release yesterday (Sept. 12), the Board announced both squads for the three four-day matches as well as the three limited over matches.

    Powell will only travel for the four-day leg of the series with matches between October 4-7, 11-14 and 18-21.

    Powell will join the likes of Vishual Singh (Vice Captain), Shamarh Brooks (Captain), Rajendra Chandrika, Evin Lewis, Shimron Hetmyer, Jahmar Hamilton, Damion Jacobs, Rahkeem Cornwall, Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai, Kemar Roach, Keon Joseph, Delorn Johnson and Reynard Leveridge.

    The young left-handed batsman returned to cricket earlier this year when he joined his local Regional Four-Day franchise, Leeward Island Hurricanes, before playing for the St. Kitts-Nevis Patriots Franchise in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

    Meanwhile, the limited overs segment will bowl off three days later, and the squad reads: Jason Mohammed (Captain), Rovman Powell, Andre Fletcher (Vice Captain), Kyle Hope, Chadwick Walton, Andre McCarty, Assad Fudadin, Veerasammy Permaul, Jon-Russ Jaggesar, Damion Jacobs, Delorn Johnson, Ronsford Beaton, Kesrick Williams and Kyle Mayers.

    The schedule is as follows:
     
    October 4 – 7              1st 4-day          R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium
    October 11 – 14          2nd 4-day         Pallekele International Cricket Stadium
    October 18 – 21          3rd 4-day         Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium
    October 24                  1st One-day     Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium
    October 27                  2nd One-day   Kurunegala Welegedera Cricket Stadium
    October 30                  3rd One-day    R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium
