The St. Kitts-Nevis National Commission for UNESCO is pleased to inform the general public that International Day of Peace in which the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is the lead agency will be commemorated on September 21, 2016. It is a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.
This year’s theme is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.” The Sustainable Development Agenda is a shared agenda to end poverty in all forms giving rise to prosperity peace and partnership. Modern challenges such as poverty, hunger, diminishing natural resources, and social inequality, pose challenges for peace and create fertile grounds for conflict.
Sustainable development contributes decisively to dissipation and elimination of these causes of conflict and provides the foundation for lasting peace. Peace helps to reinforce the conditions for sustainable development and liberates the resources needed for societies to develop and prosper.
We invite all churches community groups and other partners throughout the Federation to organize activities that will highlight the International Day of Peace.
