BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FULFILLING its 2009 pledge of removing more firearms from off the Federation’s streets, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has so far seized 14 weapons for this year.

A police press release issued on Thursday (May 21) informs that “On Monday (May 18), the Nevisian police, acting on intelligence gathered, recovered a .22 rifle in an empty lot in Gingerland. This brings to 14 the number of firearms recovered for 2009.”

Police records show the same number of firearms was removed from off the streets during the corresponding period last year. Overall, 31 firearms were seized in 2008.

    ARRESTS
The release further states that Travis Matthew of Newton Ground was arrested and charged for “wounding with intent” on May 19. The offence was committed on May 6.

Additionally, Dennis Gumbs of St. Pauls was arrested and charged for attempted murder committed on May 16, while Synrick Henderson of Dieppe Bay was arrested and charged for larceny committed on May 25. Henderson was also convicted for possession of cannabis and fined $8 000 in six months or a one-year jail term.

Meanwhile, on Thursday (May 21), Kevin ‘Judge’ Francis (21) of Parsons Village turned himself in to the Police in St. Pauls, where he was arrested and charged along with Tejay ‘T-bone’ Isaac (19) of Conaree and Jarvis ‘Swordie’ Sobrattie (24) of Mansion, for wounding with intent. The arrest of the three men followed investigations into an attack on Vincent ‘Horse Head’ Warner on Monday (May 18), where he sustained a gunshot injury to his leg.  The men will appear in Court shortly.

    CONVICTIONS
Sandy Point’s John Dore was convicted at the Sandy Point Magistrate Court for careless driving on May 19. He must pay an $850 fine in two months or spend two months in prison.

In an appearance before the Charlestown Magistrate Court on May 19, Devon Flemming was convicted for “possession and cultivation of marijuana”.

He was placed on probation for two years and must be on good behaviour and keep the peace. Any breach will result in his return to the court for sentencing.
