Another female kept Federation’s Flag flying high

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SERENE ANTOINE, a self-proclaimed “daughter of the soil”, was among 225 students who graduated from the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), St. Thomas Campus on Monday, May 18.

Graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Accounting, Serene matriculated to UVI in August 2007. She attributed her achievement to hard work, revealing that she took extra credit hours every semester in order to complete her degree requirements within two years.

Not only did Serene maintain an A average throughout her studies, she was also the recipient of several academic awards and scholarships. Her academic prowess allowed her the opportunity to travel to several international conferences, including the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) and the Thurgood Marshall Leadership Institute.

Serene excelled at both conferences earning the honours of NABA Challenge Winner and NABA Scholar, which netted her US$3 500 and US$3 000 scholarships respectively. At the Institute, she was deemed the “Best of the Best” among students who attended historically black universities.

Additionally, she was inducted into the Golden Key Honour Society, which is the world’s premier collegiate honour society. She earned a spot on the Dean’s List every semester and was Vice-President of Development in the UVI Accounting Association.

The graduate thanked God, her parents, teachers, friends and other family members for their continued support during her studies. She stressed that her time spent at UVI, although short, had taught her many valuable lessons including setting goals and aspiring to attain them.

Serene intends to pursue an MBA and take the CPA exam in the near future.
