BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE police officer accused of throwing drugs into Her Majesty's Prison has been charged criminally and disciplinary and has been suspended from duty.
The officer is Constable Cleavon Chumney No. 772.
According to reports he allegedly tossed a quantity of a substance suspected to be marijuana over the perimeter wall which separates the Basseterre Police Station and Her Majesty's Prison. The Police have indicated that the incident occurred on Tuesday (Sept. 27) sometime after 8:00p.m.
The disciplinary and criminal charges total six:
Unlawfully conveying five lighters to Her Majesty's Prison, Unlawfully conveying Tobacco to Her Majesty's Prison, possession of cannabis, possession of cannabis with intent to supply, unlawful conveying of cannabis to Her Majesty's Prison and discreditable conduct.
The release indicates that Chumney's suspension is until the outcome of the charges is known.
Ian Queeley, Commissioner of Police is quoted in the release as saying that officers who engage in illegal activities would be prosecuted.
"I echo what I have previously said, as upholders of the law, we expect our officers to maintain the highest standards of integrity. We will not condone wrong doing and everyone is responsible for their actions and will be held accountable. Officers who engage in corrupt practices will face the consequences as prescribed by law....the investigations are completed and the appropriate actions have been taken."
Chumney was attached to the Beat and Patrol Department.
