BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Police Officer and Prison Officer who were separately arrested and charged for allegedly introducing or attempting to introduce contraband into Her Majesty’s Prison have been granted bail.
SKNVibes understands that Constable Cleavon Chumney of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and Sergeant Vince Gumbs of Her Majesty’s Prison appeared before the court late last week for their bail hearings and were each granted pre-trial liberty in the sum of $10,000.
Constable Chumney – who is currently suspended from duty until this case has been dealt with – was arrested on Tuesday evening (Sept.27) after it was reported that he allegedly threw a quantity of marijuana over the wall that adjoins the Prison and the Basseterre Police Station.
He was subsequently slapped with six charges, five criminal and one disciplinary.
Two days after, news circulated of Gumbs’ arrest and he too was charged for allegedly attempting to or smuggling contraband – including alcohol, a cell phone and charger – into Her Majesty’s Prison on September 23 and 29.
Both officers are expected to return to the court on Monday (Nov. 7) to answer to their charges.
While it is believe that Gumbs has been suspended from active duty, SKNVibes has yet to receive confirmation.
Both the Commissioner of Police, Ian Queeley, and the Superintendent of Prisons, Junie ‘Scrape’ Hodge, had expressed that the men and women under their supervision would be held accountable for their actions.
