Junior Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Affairs, the Hon Laughton Brandy
    Charlestown Nevis (March 5, 2004)
While the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Affairs continues its drive to build a positive nation, Junior Minister of Youth Sports and Community Affairs, the Hon Laughton Brandy addressed the Rotary Club of Nevis, during its General Luncheon Meeting.

Accepting the invitation of the club, the Minister thanked the group and pledged his ministry’s support to them as a civic organisation.  He wished the newly formed organisation a good and productive relationship with his ministry.

The meeting was held at the Old Manor Hotel on Thursday, and Minister Brandy congratulated the club on pooling its individual resources for the betterment of the community.  He noted, “You have done so with the consciousness that this is a most noble cause, but have also done so fully aware of the challenges to achieving your vision.”

He observed that his ministry takes their responsibilities very seriously, saying, “We interpret the responsibilities to be one of molding and keeping focus on our youths, and by extension, we view it as one of building and securing the future of this country.”

“The task, you will agree is an ominous one that we cannot near accomplish with out the youth-caring individuals, without parents with a burning desire for the proper upbringing of their children; without churches; community clubs and the business community,” expressed Minister Brandy.

In commending the club for embarking on an initiative programme in mentorship of the youths, Minister Brandy said that there was no greater satisfaction than seeing a child climb the ladder of success especially one who, were it not for intervention, that child’s life could have been so much different.

“I want to encourage you to be strategic about your selection,” the Minister told the group.  “Seek to maximise the benefit of our investment.  Target families instead of individuals and look among your communities for those families whose standard of living appears to be consistently low.”
