Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 04, 2016 (SKNIS): The formal meeting of the Cabinet took place on Friday, September 30, 2016. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris.
1. Cabinet heard presentations from a potential investor group and welcomed the interest of investors in St. Kitts and Nevis. The proposals are to be evaluated and fully analyzed by SKIPA (St. Kitts Investment Promotion Agency).
2. Cabinet approved a number of alien land holding licenses to facilitate the sale of properties to non-nationals and to facilitate their participation as directors and shareholders of companies. Cabinet also approved certain Bills to form part of the legislative agenda: Land Cadastre Bill.
3. Cabinet received an update on the Fresh Start Programme and was assured that a new tranche of funding will be available to assist SMEs (Small and Medium Size Enterprises) with financing.
4. Cabinet also approved a number of concessions for SMEs (duty-free and waiver of customs service charge).
5. Cabinet as part of its programme in providing constructive avenues for the development of our young people have approved financing support for the Cayon playing field and the Tabernacle playing field—substantial upgrades will take place at the Tabernacle recreational field and new facilities will be added for the convenience of sports enthusiasts. These significant upgrades at Cayon and Tabernacle are expected to commence before year end.
6. Carnival discussed the upcoming Carnival celebrations and determined that a proper home for our national carnival activities was long overdue. In that regard, the Cabinet committed to commence significant upgrades to Carnival Village.
7. Cabinet received a presentation on the alternative sites for the Basseterre High School (BHS) and has accepted that a new BHS will be built in East Basseterre.
8. Cabinet received a recommendation from the Ministry of Tourism for substantial upgrades of Black Rocks in Belle Vue with regards to Black Rocks’ historical, educational and touristic value. Cabinet has agreed to designate Black Rocks as a national heritage site.
