BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THREE of the Federation’s most decorated police officers recently participated in the Latin America-Caribbean Chapter (LACC) of the FBINNA’s annual Retrainer Conference in Brazil.

Police Commissioner Austin Williams, Assistant Commissioner with responsibility for Plans, Intelligence and Law Enforcement, Ian Queeley, and Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Superintendent Ivor Blake were among the 400 delegates from 31 countries, eight of which are CARICOM member states.

A communiqué issued by the Police Press and Public Relations Office informs that the trio are graduates of the FBI National Academy in Virginia, one of the world’s most prestigious law enforcement institutions.

It further states that the week-long conference was aimed at “keeping graduates current with the challenges within the law enforcement environment, and at the same time sharing new ideas, initiatives and experiences to combat these threats. This was done through a combination of lectures and presentations from experts in the various fields”.

According to the release, topics for discussion included Strategic Planning, Ethical Leadership and Leadership Development, the Use of DNA in Criminal Investigations, and High-intensity Drug Trafficking Areas.

During the conference, an agreement was signed between US and Brazilian officials about arrangements for Brazil to begin utilisation of the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

The FBI website enlightens that CODIS is a computer system that stores DNA profiles created by federal, state and local crime laboratories in the US which has the ability to search the database in order to assist in the identification of crime suspects.

Columbia will host next year’s conference.
