BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – OVER the last weekend, the St. Kitts and Nevis national football team lost 1-nil to French Guiana in Cayenne in their opening match in the third round of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Caribbean Cup.
A 61st minute strike from forward Arnold Abelenti was enough to separate the two teams, giving the home side three points.
Team St. Kitts and Nevis would now have to focus its attention on the final game in the three-nation group, which is a must win encounter when they come up against regional powerhouse Haiti in a rescheduled match.
Originally schedule to play tomorrow (Sept. 11) at Warner Park, the game was cancelled, according to the CFU, the governing body for the sport in the region.
In a statement sent out over the weekend, reasons cited for the cancellation included the effects of Hurricane Matthew.
“The match was scheduled to be played Tuesday at the Warner Park Football Stadium, but Hurricane Matthew related issues have necessitated its cancellation. The Caribbean Football Union General Secretary Neil Cochrane officially informed the St. Kitts and Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) and the Haitian Football Federation of the cancellation. Match officials have also been directly informed.”
According to a letter sent to both associations, flight problems were the major challenged cited.
“This second consecutive postponement of matches in Group 2 is caused by flight cancellations, which make it impossible for the Haitian delegation to depart Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to St. Kitts in a timely manner...”
Contacted for a comment on the cancellation, an official at the SKNFA indicated that they are still awaiting word from the CFU on when the game would be played.
