High school students to faceoff in Pumpkin Dessert Competition

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - STUDENTS of the a number of high schools in St. Kitts have gone up against each other in friendly sporting and educational activities. And this morning (Oct. 11) they would be engaging in a dessert competition to see which school can produce the most delicious dessert from the main ingredient, pumpkin.

The Pumpkin Dessert Challenge event is being organized by the Department of Agriculture as part of its observance of World Food Day and also as part of its thrust to promote healthy living and eating locally produced foods.

Chairman of the Organizing Committee Jenaldo Gilbert told SKNVibes that six high schools were originally targeted for participation in this event but two opted out.

This morning (Oct. 11) at the compound of the Advanced Vocational Education Centre (AVEC), students of the Basseterre High School, Charles E. Mills Secondary School, Cayon High School and Verchild’s High School will be allotted a couple of hours to create and present their masterpieces to the judges.

Gilbert explained that the event springboards from Restaurant Week which was observed a couple of months ago and had pumpkin as its main ingredient.

“Pumpkin was the main attraction this year for the Restaurant Week of activities, so we decided that for the World Food Day activity we would have an activity with the same ingredient. Pumpkins are an easy commodity for us to get because we produce so much of it locally. So this also is a promotion of buying locally-produced items. We are also promoting healthy living through healthy eating.”

Each school will be represented by two students with some assistance from their Home Economics teacher.

The dessert must be produced at the event and a panel of judges will be on hand to declare the winner.

It has been suggested that as part of this competition, provision be made to have the winning dessert featured on the menu of one of the restaurants on the island.

The event begins at 9:00 a.m. and concludes around midday.

    May the best school win!
