12 October 2016 -- The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is seeking to expand public access to data from the 2010 round of population and housing censuses. These efforts will also provide a sound basis for a more rapid and effective dissemination of data from the upcoming 2020 round of censuses.
ECLAC will equip representatives from three national statistical offices with the skills necessary to develop web applications for the dissemination of national census data sets. In the long term, improved online access to these data sources will encourage their use in research, development planning and evidence-based policymaking.
Online access to census data sets is provided through the REDATAM (REtrieval of DATa for small Areas by Microcomputer) software. REDATAM allows statistical offices to provide their users with much improved access to data while still protecting the confidentiality of individual census records. In addition to census data, REDATAM can also be used to provide online access to survey data sets such as living conditions surveys.
Statistics and information technology professionals from the Bureau of Statistics of Guyana, the Statistical Office of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and the General Bureau of Statistics of Suriname will benefit from the workshop which will be held from 11 to 21 October, 2016, in Paramaribo, Suriname. Experienced trainers and software developers from CELADE, ECLAC’s Population Division, and ECLAC Caribbean will guide the participants through theoretical and interactive sessions.
This workshop follows a similar training event held in Jamaica from 4 to 15 April 2016, which was carried out in collaboration with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). On that occasion, 17 persons from the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Saint Kitts and Nevis benefitted from the training.
