Advance Leader Bronze (ALB) Success!
St. Kitts, BASSETERRE, October 5th, 2016 -- On Saturday 20th August, 2016, Sugar City Toastmasters Club achieved another educational goal thanks to Toastmaster Gillian Carmichael Branford who attained her Advance Leader Bronze award. This is a level where members, after earning the Competent Leader (CL) award, can further refine and develop their leadership skills by working in the advanced leader program. Members working in this program pursue Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB) and Advanced Leader Silver (ALS) recognition.
When asked about the speech topic chosen, she responded:
“My presentation title was "Keeping the Commitment". I used the quote: `Commitment means staying loyal to what you said you were going to do long after the mood you said it in has left you”, to define this trait and show how the word itself can motivate us when we feel we cannot go on anymore.
Keeping the Commitment is about keeping the Toastmasters Promise which we take when we are inducted as new members. This promise is made to Ourselves, Each other, and the Club. It embodies the general truth that we have to (1) Participate, (2) Interact and (3) Maintain a Quality Club.
The first three promises embody our assurance to ourselves to participate as members. This means we must first show up, then do our part by preparing our projects according to the guidelines in our manuals -- not to attain perfection -- but to garner skill as effective speakers and become better with each project.
The next four (4) promises embody another assurance, this time to each other when we interact with our fellow members. We interact by empowering our members with feedback that enables them to build on what they already have. Ninety years ago Ralph Smedley said that "effective evaluations is the crux on which we become better" and this is still true today.
In the meantime, the organization is a professional one, and as such we must adhere to the codes of conduct and observe ethical standards by observing the guidelines set forth by Toastmasters International, treating our members and guests with respect and courtesy, and doing all of this in a fun, friendly environment.
We can adapt these maxims in every area of our lives: professionally, personally, and socially. We must commit in order to succeed. "Commitment is the glue that bonds us to our goal"- Jill Koenig
Earning my ALB was a wonderful and personal accomplishment. Through this process I have learnt skills that I can adapt to every area of my life. I feel empowered to go forth and motivate others. Beyond my personal accomplishment, I am proud to have contributed to the achievements of my club.
Vice President Education, Eartha Cassius, chose one of my favourite songs, ‘I believe I can fly’ by R. Kelly, one of my favourite artistes. This song reminds me that I am in charge of my own destiny, and that I can do anything once I remain committed to my dream and the process.
Toastmaster Zeva Alcendor, CC, called me “10 woman in one!” I chuckled at the comment. It was hilarious but I loved it. It seemed true not only in my life as a Toastmaster but also as a wife, a mother, a professional, and a friend.
All of us play theses many roles daily especially with all the demands from everyone around us. We are a most fortunate generation; we are smarter, stronger, more talented, and more productive than the generations before us.
We often are expected to be like everyone else because of this, but we must remember that we are unique and unrivalled. That is the only way for us to reach our full potential and make our individual contribution in this world.”
Indeed, Toastmaster Gillian Branford is COMMITTED to staying on track to accomplish both her club and personal goals.
Sugar City Toastmasters congratulated her on this major achievement as she was pinned and presented with a bouquet of flowers.
