Businesses pour out support for science fair

    Roadtown, Tortola - Several businesses have joined with the Department of Education in presenting this year’s Science Fair. The BVI National Science Fair which will be held on Thursday, May 28 will be held under the theme, ‘A Change in our Environment: Reducing the BVI’s Carbon Footprint’.

     

    The businesses which have partnered with the Department to present this year’s fair are Scotia Bank BVI Ltd., Clarence Thomas Ltd. Home Centre, LIME, Qwomar Trading Ltd., Island Services Ltd., First Bank Virgin Islands and James Todman Construction Ltd.

     

    The businesses contributed financially and provided the awards and LIME is making a contribution of three computers that will be presented to the winners of the secondary school debate competition to be held on Saturday, June 6.

     

    Coordinator of the BVI National Science Fair, Mrs. Jillian Douglas-Phillip said that she was not only pleased but impressed with the response of the businesses.

     

    “I found myself sometimes collecting multiple cheques from happy business managers and owners in one day. They were all very sincere in their desire to help with the fair, sometimes offering additional assistance”, she said.

     

    Lynette Smith, Branch Manager for Scotia Bank Ltd. said that the bank has a strong mandate to assist in community activities.

     

    “This is one way we can show that we are giving back,” she said.

     

    The 2009 BVI National Science Fair begins on Thursday May 28 with an opening ceremony at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall at 9 a.m. The exhibition of science fair projects will then take place at 12 noon to 6 p.m. The finals for both the Math and Science quizzes will begin at 1 p.m.

     

    Other planned activities for the 2009 fair are the final moot debates competition for secondary students on Saturday June 6 at 8 p.m. at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community Centre Auditorium. The final debate will take place between students from the Elmore Stoutt High School and the St. George's Secondary School. Both schools were chosen after preliminary competitions.

     

    The BVI National Science fair is an initiative created by the Department of Education to promote the use of science outside the classroom and to foster new interest in students for Mathematics and Science alike.
