BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN keeping with the tradition of local students excelling in foreign tertiary institutions, six of the Federation’s leading scholars earned degrees at the Midwestern State University’s (MSU) May commencement ceremonies.
As the top graduate in the school’s College of Liberal Arts, Zahnela Claxton of Nevis was awarded the President’s Medal for Excellence. The former teacher maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and earned summa cum laude honours in her attainment of a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish and Psychology.
Summa cum laude honours also went to Karyl Williams of Newton Ground, who received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Studies and Spanish. Meanwhile, Kerilyn Edwards of Gingerland, obtained magna cum laude honours in her pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in Management Information Systems.
Hezron Wade, also of Nevis, graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a double major in Accounting and Finance, while Daryl Lloyd of St. Kitts earned the same honours with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology.
Also, Milan Harris earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science.
Numerous parents and well-wishers travelled from the Federation to attend the commencement ceremonies. Bajan soca artiste Rupee was a performer at the annual graduation concert, which was patronised by over 400 Caribbean students and guests.
Over the past 14 years, MSU has graduated over 600 Caribbean students including approximately 80 from the Federation. Twelve new students from St. Kitts and Nevis will initiate studies at the university in August.
According to Jamilah Adams, the government’s Assistant Human Resource Manager, the Federation and MSU signed an agreement almost two decades ago that allows local students to benefit from reduced tuition fees.
“If a student applies to MSU and supplies the university with their transcript and has adequate grades, then they will pay reduced tuition fees. And once they matriculate to the university, they have the opportunity to earn a number of its scholarships for Caribbean students,” she informed.
