B.V.I. Wednesday, May 27 – Government recently signed a contract for $29,602.38 with Neighbourhood Construction for preliminary work at the intersection of Admin Drive and Waterfront Drive in preparation for the installation of traffic lights.

The scope of the contract includes demolition, rehabilitation and installation of sidewalks, and drainage work.

“The installation of the traffic lights and signals will require various road alignment changes to the current layout of the intersection to accommodate improved traffic operations, signalised control, pedestrian flow and associated drainage solutions,” Acting Director of the Public Works Department Dr. Drexel Glasgow said.

Dr. Glasgow added that “the road changes will include the installation of turning lanes, reconfiguration of the turning radius for vehicles to improve turning movements, the installation and realignment of sidewalks and the installation of drainage structures.”

The motoring public and pedestrians are being advised to proceed with caution when traversing these areas. “As with any road construction project, we anticipate that there will be impacts to traffic operations to all road ways linked to the intersection under construction for the duration of the project.  We do not need to re-route traffic during the project, however, if such a need arises, common traffic delineation methods using high visibility cones and signage will be implemented,” Dr. Glasgow told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

On March 13th Government signed a contract for $475,802.00 with JoClaud Enterprises Limited for the installation of traffic lights and signals at the Admin Drive and Waterfront Drive intersection and at the Road Town Roundabout in an effort to relieve traffic congestion in these areas.

Phase one of the Waterfront Drive Modernisation Project, once completed, is expected to increase traffic flow and minimise congestion, while providing a safer pedestrian-friendly capital and reaffirming Government’s commitment to implementing improved traffic management systems for Road Town.
