BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Federation’s under-20 football team has done its country proud when the youngsters defeated all odds to qualify for the 2017 CONCACAF U-20 Championship.
The junior team opened the Caribbean Football Union U-20 final round tournament with a 3-1 defeat at the feet of Bermuda before rebounding to hold Leeward Islands’ rivals Antigua and Barbuda to a 2-2 draw on Sunday (Oct. 23).
But the big smile for the youngsters came two days later when they brushed aside the home team, Curacao, 3-1, through goals from Javier Sutton in the 23rd minute, Delano Hodge in the 67th and Dakarai Phipps closing out in the 76th minute.
The victory meant that St. Kitts and Nevis finished with four points from their three games.
Those results left the Sugar Boys positioned third in Group A, behind Antigua and Barbuda (7 points) and Bermuda ( 4 points).
According to reports coming out of Curacao, team St. Kitts and Nevis failed in its bid to qualify for the knockout rounds of the CFU Tournament currently ongoing in the Dutch-speaking island.
But by virtue of finishing on four points, team St. Kitts and Nevis qualified as the best third placed team in the competition for the CONCACAF Tournament.
They would join the top four teams from this leg of the competition - Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda and Bermuda.
In the next round of the tournament set to take place in Costa Rica in February and March next year, the junior will join 11 other nations including the host as they seek to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Korea.
