Police High Command commends Nevis Division

ACP Joseph Liburd

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE High Command of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has publicly thanked its Nevis Branch for their recovery of the Federation’s 14th illegal weapon for 2009.

On Monday, May 18, police in Nevis recovered a .22 rifle with a sniper scope from an empty lot of land at Gingerland, bringing the number of illegal weapons recovered for the year to 14. Police records show an identical number was recovered during the same period in 2008.

According to a Police Press and Public Relations Office communiqué issued last week, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Joseph Liburd praised Nevisian police for their “vigilance in the recovery of another dangerous firearm from the streets”.

It informs that, in commending the officer, Liburd highlighted the need for continued good police-public cooperation, as it was this cooperation that led to the recovery of the illegal firearm. He urged the public to continue their support for the police to ensure the nation’s safety.

Speaking exclusively to SKNVibes, the ACP underlined another major factor behind the force’s recovery of dangerous weapons – the formation of the Anti-Gang Unit and its intelligence-led operations.

Liburd however noted that “one firearm on the street is too many” and stressed he would not be satisfied until all illegal weapons were seized and recovered.

Thirty-one firearms were recovered in 2008.
