BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - WITH a crowd-pleasing performance, Calypso Leo belted out his masterpiece, ‘I don’t wanna grow up so’, to dethrone King Saani and take the crown at this year’s Green Valley Junior Calypso Competition.
The competition was held last night (May 28) at Maynard’s Park, Cayon and had seen Calypso Leo (son of notable calypsonian De Provoker) beating last year’s winner King Saani, who sang ‘Mankind leads the way’, into second place. In third position was Lord Scribbles, who moved the audience with his ‘It ain’t easy’.
The other three calypsonians who also did a great job were Lord Cally, Mighty Survival and the Mighty Sugar Shanty.
According to the Chairman of the Calypso Sub-Committee, Dominique Stevens, he is proud of the young calypsonians who all delivered very well. He noted that the turnout was also fairly good.
Stevens said that the Best of the Best Competition, which was also scheduled for last night, had to be canceled due to the lack of contestants.
Last night’s event, which ended at 11:00 p.m., also featured sideshows by King Godfrey, Provoker and a number of models.
