CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (MAY 29, 2009) -- Residents of Nevis have been urged to make early preparations for the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane season.

Acting Premier of Nevis Hon. Robelto Hector made the call ahead of the June 01 – November 30 hurricane season, when he spoke to the Department of Information on Friday.

“The Hurricane season is fast approaching and at this time I would like to ask residents to be very cautious even though the season is predicted to be near normal.

“Be cautious and start your preparations heeding in particular the words of the Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD)…I want us to bear in mind that a hurricane at this time is something that we must be prepared for,” he said.

The Minister used the opportunity to praise the NDMD for its invaluable direction to residents in particular, during the hurricane season and advised the public to continue to heed the advice.

He said it was important to remember the devastating effects past hurricanes have had on the island and more recently the passage of Hurricane Omar in 2008.

“We must remember what happened during Hurricane Omar, today we[Nevis Island Administration] are still seeking to address some of the effects we felt it in the agricultural sector and in the whole economy of this island,” he said.

The NIA has declared June 01 a national day of prayer for protection during the Hurricane season.

According to the April 2009 forecast by Scientists Mr. Phil Klotzbach and Professor William Grey of the Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project, the Atlantic Basin activity is expected generate 12 named storms, six of which are expected to become hurricanes.
