BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SINGING ANGIE last night (May 30) stopped defending Monarch Bra Bread in his quest for a repeat victory and was crowned Queen at the Green Valley Calypso Competition held at Maynard’s Park in Cayon.
Singing Angie, whose real name is Andrea Walters, told SKNVibes Pep that she felt “overwhelmed” with the victory after winning the judges nod with ‘Queen of Green’ and ‘Life is like that’.
Walters also received the award for the Calypsonian of the Year by the Green Valley Festival.
Bra Bread was beaten into the First Runner-up with ‘Reclaiming the community’ and ‘I am not a running king’ in which he declared that he was not backing down from the fight to win the crown.
The Second Runner-up position went to a former four-time King of Green valley, King Godfrey, who had a very strong performance during his first presentation of ‘Sing for me supper’ but encountered some problems while performing his second song, ‘Tribute to my king’.
In the Third Runner-up position was De Provoker who sang ‘Too much rage’ and ‘Green Valley Fest has a Lapse’.
A strong performance also came from the Mighty History, who wanted to know ‘De Solution’ and when he would get a ‘Piece A De cake’, while De Priest sang ‘Me girlfriend tell me’ and ‘Gunshot blast’.
The Mighty Shotgun Junior sang ‘Festive Mood’ and ‘Mama’, while the Mighty Florser sang ‘Guns Shooting’ and ‘Are you prepared’.
The calypsonians were judged on lyrics, music and performance.
Calypso Reggie performed the duties of Master of Ceremonies and the music for the night was provided by the Grand Masters Band.
During the show the Green Valley Committee took the opportunity to acknowledge several persons for their invaluable contribution to the development of the festival and the Cayon community.
The Green vValley Festival continues with a Car Show today and the International Night while on June 1 the curtains will come down with the J ‘Ouvert, Parade Day and Last Lap activities.
J‘Ouvert will begin at 6:00 a.m. where, according to the organisers, that specific time was stipulated by the law enforcement body that would provide security during the jam session.
J ‘Ouvert is scheduled to end at 11:00 a.m.
