McKnight residents scamper in morning shootout

By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes

BASSEETERRE, St. Kitts – SOME residents of and visitors to McKnight this morning (June 1) ran to the nearest place that offered safety, as three gunmen were engaged in a shootout.

According to a well-informed source, at about 10:55 a.m. this morning, two men were engaged in a very heated argument in Tibou Avenue, McKnight, Basseterre, which resulted in one of them running in an easterly direction on Central Street and the other south along Tibou Avenue.

Some 15 minutes later, one of the men emerged from an alleyway that links Tibou Avenue with Fiennes Avenue with a firearm in his hand. Shortly after his emergence, two unmasked armed men were seen walking from Central Street into Fiennes Avenue.

The source said that upon seeing the man in the vicinity of Y’s Shop on Malone Avenue, the two gunmen started firing at him and he ran away uninjured.

On arrival at the scene, SKNVibes met a number of police officers who were conducting investigations into the incident and two spent shells were seen on the street.

Speaking with a seemingly frustrated officer, SKNVibes learnt that no one was willing to provide information to the investigators. He stated that when witnesses remain tight-lipped on incidents of such nature, the public always cast blame on the police for having unsolved crimes.

He further stated that even though the police might receive a tipoff from an anonymous or known source, “that is only information and not evidence to be presented in court to warrant prosecution”.
