Sandy Point Young Labour Fun Day promotes community togetherness

By: VonDez Phipps, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A few mid-afternoon scattered showers did not put an end to yesterday’s (June 1) Fun Day organised by the Constituency Number Five Young Labour, as the youth organisation encouraged community togetherness through sport and games.

The daylong event brought together about 100 children and adults on the Sandy Point Hard Court as they enjoyed various games, live entertainment and dancing competitions. Bouncing Castles and Power Wheels toy trucks gave the smaller children a fun afternoon while the older ones enjoyed barbeque, drinks and socialised with the party’s candidate for the area, Dr. Norgen Wilson.

Speaking to SKNVibes, President of the Constituency Five Young Labour Keisha Archibald explained that the group, established in April this year, was designed to educate youth on areas of politics, academics and general knowledge. She said the group recognises the importance of the right to vote, stressing that “it is not about one person; it is for the entire community”.

She said the fun day was planned to foster community togetherness and to revive some traditional family games to benefit the people of Sandy Point and surrounding communities. Shestressed the event was to benefit everyone in the community and it was not a politically oriented.

“It is little events like these help to bring the people within the community back together. We have brought back some of the more traditional games and we encouraged parents and children to come out as we continue to promote building stronger families and safer communities. There is more power in the community when families come out to socialise together,” Archibald noted.

She informed that the group has already assisted in the painting of the Sandy Point Primary School and is seeking various ways in which it could improve the community.

Archibald added that the response has been very “enthusiastic” and informed that the community could expect similar social events in the near future.
