Is King Socrates competing against himself?

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOR both the Eliminations and Semi-Finals of the Sugar Mas 45 Calypso Monarch Competition, King Socrates has emerged at the top of the list, but it is being suggested that the veteran calypsonian might be shooting himself in the foot.

Entering this year’s competition, King Socrates penned songs for at least six artistes – including himself – and besides him, three of those have advanced to the final round.

The Semi-Finals was held on Sunday evening (Dec. 18) and King Socrates gained 811 points, Calypso Craig 784, 741 for Singing Jackie, Little Miss Attitude got 735, Queenie G got 734, 730 for Hollywood, 722 for Lady Diva and I-Soursop, as the alternate, got 719 points.

These seven would come up against reigning Monarch King Astro on December 29 with the hope of dethroning him.

However, King Socrates might have placed himself in quite a peculiar position, especially since half of the 16 songs which would be performed at the Finals are his compositions. In other words, he could be edged out by another calypsonian using his material.

Though some might say King Socrates is in a peculiar spot, he said it is his way of assisting calypsonians while at the same time contributing to the preservation of the art form.

“Over the years I have been accused of giving away my best songs. I don’t just write songs for people, I write songs at my standard. So when somebody has my material onstage they can work it and beat whoever it is in that competition, including myself.

“And that is the whole idea…to give unselfishly to calypsonians who need assistance. Whether I am there or not, I still make a contribution. The fact is they are there and they can take my very own material and beat me with it. It has happened before. Anastasia was able to do it. So the challenge to come and beat me is not impossible. I am competing, I have material and I have to work what I have and work it to the end result of beating whoever is the monarch.”

The ‘Pan Song’ and ‘Failing Grade’ songs were written by King Socrates, but they were given to Calypso Craig who was his closest competitor in both the Eliminations and the Semi-Finals.

Lady Diva’s songs as well as those of newcomer Little Miss Attitude were also written by King Socrates.

The artiste told SKNVibes that the position in which he is could be classified as peculiar but, at the end of the day, it is a competition that everybody wants to be victorious regardless of whose material they win with.

“Peculiar perhaps but each person who has their material competing seriously for the same crown or the same end result, and they are not seeing it from that perspective. They are coming out to compete and give their endeavoured best. So I would have to have the same mindset and not take things for granted at any level.

“One of the competitors, Calypso Craig, was rather close on my heels and he did his second song, ‘Pan Song’, at the Semis and he did very well. The distance between us was widened somewhat. He was very close at the Eliminations and the gap was widened at the Semis by about 27 points. So I am not taking it for granted.”

King Socrates said Calypso Craig has openly declared that he is going to trump him in Sugar Mas 45 Calypso Monarch Competition.

“He has challenged me…he gave an open challenge that he is going to beat me. So it is my thing to make sure that he does not. This gives some energy to the competition; there is no foregone conclusion. He can very well use those two songs, because they are excellent songs. Based on his execution he can change the whole dynamics of the show.”

While King Socrates keeps one eye on Calypso Craig and his other competitors, he also has his eye on King Astro’s crown.

“And don’t forget the reigning Monarch has won twice consecutively; he is not just going to come with his hands up. I expect a good fight from him. The last competition is the one that really, really matters. That’s when all the big guns will pull out all the big guns. I think I can unseat Astro, but that is left to be proven.”
