Invincible retains Primary Schools calypso competition crown 23 December 2016

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH a near 100-point margin between him and his closest competition, Terron ‘Invincible’ Webbe of Nevis has lived up to his name and proved he is worthy of retaining the Primary School Calypso Competition crown.

The spirited young man of the St. Thomas Primary School took the stage last evening (Dec. 22) as the fourth performer of the competition in the Sugar Mas 45 competition, dominating the space with his presence and performance prowess.

Besides Webbe, Divonique ‘Divi’ Liburd and Marquise ‘Mighty J’ Washington of Nevis participated in the competition along with the Kittitian counterparts Jahshya ‘Lady Shya’ Donovan, Z.quan McDowell and Kimberly Smikle.

While some performances were stronger than others, all were commendable as were the topics addressed which included crime, deviant behaviour and national heroes.

Crowned the winner of the evening, Webbe amassed a total of 429 points leaving Washington 95 points behind. And behind him was Donovan with 333 points and Liburd with 319 points.

It was undetectable while he performed but Webbe told SKNVibes he experienced a little trepidation before going on stage.

“I really felt I really had some serious competition. I freaked out a little bit but I kept on and I did my best.”

Webbe explained to SKNVibes that his grandfather is a musician who played at hotels in Nevis and indicated that he himself began singing at the tender age of two years. And realizing that he had that affinity, his family ensured that he followed that path.

His dynamic performance, Webbe explained, was partly due to the support of his mother and friends who were in the audience.

While some have expressed their fear that calypso is dying a slow death because of the lack of interest of the younger generation, the performances last evening prove that there is yet hope for the art form.
