Katherina Davis 2016/2017 Carnival Queen

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FIVE beauties hit the Carnival stage last night (Dec. 28) and while they are all queens in their own right, only one – Katherina Davis – left the competition with the 2016/2017 National Carnival Queen crown.

Sponsored by National Caribbean Insurance Co. Ltd, Davis competed against Miss St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank, Shantara Hewlett; Miss Development Bank Hydeia Tyson; Miss St. Christopher and Nevis Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA) Nordia Demming and Miss Carib Brewery Jonieka Smithen.

The quintet appeared in five traditional judged segments: the Interview, National Pride, Swimsuit, Evening Wear and Talent segments. They also appeared in an additional one, the Question and Answer Segment, during which the same question was asked of all the ladies.

Sections of the audience always seem to have their favourite contestants and more often than not, when the results are read and they do not line up with people’s expectations, the judges are accused of cheating.

And this competition was no different. The two obvious favourites of the crowd were Davis and Demming and the supporters of the latter seem to believe that she deserved to win the crown.

With 1079 points, Hewlett was named Second Runner Up and Demming, with 1147.5 points, was named the First Runner Up. Davis won the crown having amassed 1224.5 points.

Davis won the Interview, Swimsuit, Evening Gown Segments as well as the Miss Photogenic and Chairperson’s Awards.

Demming won the Talent Segment, the Question and Answer Segment as well as the Miss Amity Award.

Smithen’s National Pride Appearance was adjudged to be the best of the evening.

The Sugar Mas 44 National Carnival Queen Orngel Erskine took her final walk before her reign ended during which she highlighted some aspects of her one-year journey in that capacity.

Erskine reign concluded as soon as Davis was crowned. Should Davis, for whatever reason be unable to fulfill her obligations as queen, the First Runner Up, Demming, would be called upon to assume such responsibilities.

Last evening's event was hosted by Jamaica's Bella Blair and entertainment was provided by the Genesis Band and Poise SKN.
