Calypso Craig unseats King Astro; is Sugar Mas 45 Calypso Monarch

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE popular refrain of “de judges cheat”, was heard from several at Carnival Village this morning (Dec. 30) when the results of the Sugar Mas 45 Calypso Monarch Competition were announced.

Of the seven that came up against the reigning Monarch, King Astro, Calypso Craig received the most points of the evening and the 2016/2017 crown.

Hollywood, Socrates, Queen Jackie, Calypso Craig, Queenie G, Lil Miss Attitude, King Astro and Lady Diva performed before a hundreds-strong audience, each appearing very confident of impending success. The competition was described by some audience members as being a tight one and a close race with certain calypsonians expected to make it in the top four.

As is often the case however, the audience’s scorecards did not match up with the judges’ and in the Third Runner Up Position is Queenie G with 683 points. And 28 points ahead of her is Singing Jackie with King Socrates placing First Runner Up with 751 points.

Calypso Craig, now King Craig, amassed 776 points by the end of the second round of the competition.

While King Astro did not make it into the top four, SKNVibes is still unclear as to what his placement might have been.

SKNVibes spoke with a number of patrons and their views on the outcome of the night’s event were varied, yet all seem to agree that “de judges cheat”.

Some said Socrates’ performances were more than enough to win him the crown while others questioned how Singing Jackie made it into the top four and Lady Diva did not?

While these and a plethora of other questions are being thrown about, it must be remembered that the audience’s scorecards often differ from the official scorecards of the judges for a number of reasons. But at the end of the day, the judges’ decision is final.

The publication recalls that a number of days ago speaking with King Craig, he reiterated an open challenge he made to King Socrates that he would beat him and take the crown. And that he did.

Both songs which King Craig performed last evening – Failing Grade and Pan Song -were penned by King Socrates.

This is the first time that King Craig has won a Senior Calypso Monarch crown and while he celebrates that achievement, he continues to celebrate that of his son, Mighty T who, only four days ago, won his first crown as the Sugar Mas 45 Junior Calypso Monarch.
