Grand Masters’ ‘Wuk U Shift’ wins Road March

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Small Axe Band’s Road March winning streak ended today (Jan. 3) following the Carnival Committee’s announcement that the Grand Masters Band took the title this year with their popular song ‘Wuk U Shift’.

Of the street activities which take place during each year’s Sugar Mas festival, the Road March competition is the most anticipated and can be argued that it generates the most discussion.

From 2012 to 2015, the Small Axe Band hah dominated that competition, snatching the award each year and their fans – according to reports received by this publication – believed that they would have taken the title again.

The Carnival Committee – via its Facebook page – has announced that the Grand Masters Band amassed 59 points to take the title. It does not however indicate the positions of the other bands and their points.

Speaking with SKNVibes, Manager of the Grand Masters Band, Wingrove Hicks explained that if the Small Axe Band had won again the hand would have been completed, “But we cut off that fifth finger.”

He said there was a particular strategy employed which took into account the Small Axe Band’s weakness.

“We actually released the rhythm since in February in this year. We released the song in December. We always release rhythms throughout the year and we make songs of those that people latch on to. We knew we were going to win; we came out to win.

“You see, when one has been winning for so many years consecutively, they get complacent with their victory, and when they lose they don’t know what hit them. They got a rude awakening and d shift wuk on dem.”

For some, today’s Las’ Lap Jam is the last chance to enjoy themselves before heading back to work tomorrow. But for the Grand Masters Band, it is a jam of victory.

The Las’ Lap session is scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon and concludes sometime during the evening.
