Banker's Mas Camp and Small Axe dethroned

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - TWO of the most revered and treasured titles in the annual Carnival Day Parade have this year created disappointment for some people as the defending champions were dethroned.

The title of Best Grand Carnival Troupe and that of Road March went differently this year, with Banker's Mas Camp and the Small Axe Band losing out.

According to results published today (Jan. 3) by the National Carnival Committee, the  Grand Masters Band, with its ‘Wuk U Shift’, was the unstoppable force that prevented the Small Axe Band from winning the Road March title for the fifth consecutive year.

In the Carnival Troupe category, Ultra Carnival with Carnival Jungle gained the top spot with 785 points, beating out RIO 2016 by Fhunn Vybz (781) and Glimpse of Basseterre by Banker's Mass Camp - 766 points.

The Large Troupe was awarded to Fhunn Vybz with its Rio 2016, while the title of Best Awareness Troupe went to Banker's Mas Camp’s Glimpse of Basseterre.

Ultra Carnival was adjudged the Most Punctual Troupe with its Carnival Jungle.

Like previous years, Banker's Mas Camp took home both the King and Queen titles.

Led by Jonelle Rawlins and Romaine Belgrove, Banker's Mas Camp entered with The Market for the Queen title and The Circus for King.

In the musical category, Small Axe walked away with the Best Sounding Band, EK The Real Right took the Best Sounding DJ, while Most Popular Band title went to Nu Vybes and Most Popular DJ was won by Xtreme Asylum.

And the Beauty Everywhere by DFX was given the title of First Troupe to Launch.

The 2016/2017 Grand Parade saw a relatively large turnout but some of the troupes had smaller numbers when compared with previous years.

Revellers and onlookers will today have the opportunity to participate in the final street activity of Sugar Mas 45 - Las’ Lap – which is scheduled to begin at 12 noon.
