UPDATE: Child in critical condition following traffic accident, driver in custody

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (UPDATE - 10:41p.m. 9 Jan. 2017) - THE child who was involved in a traffic accident in Keys earlier this afternoon (Jan. 9) is said to be in critical condition and the driver of the vehicle which stuck him is reportedly in police custody.

SKNVibes understands that the child is not four years old as previously reported, but he is about seven years old.

This publication has been reliably informed that he was struck by motor omnibus HA127 which was being driven by Kevin Lawrence of Harris' VIllage.

It is understood that the vehicle was travelling from Cayon's direction to Basseterre's and when it got in vicinity of the 4-Mile mark, it struck the child who was reportedly crossing the road.

The injured lad was taken to the Joseph N. France General Hospital via privately-owned vehicle and is warded at the Intensive Care Unit.

It is being reported that following the incident, Lawrence left the scene to take refuge elsewhere as he felt that the members of that village, who were irate over what has transpired, might harm him. SKNVibes was informed that he went to the Basseterre Police Station where he remains.

    Investigations are ongoing.

(6:46 p.m. 9 Jan. 2017) - SKNVIBES has confirmed that a young boy was struck by a passenger bus this afternoon (Jan. 9) in the Keys Village area.

Details are sketchy at this time but it is understood that the incident occurred at or near the 4-Mile mark in that village and that it occurred sometime after 5:00 p.m.

The child – who is said to be about four years old - was reportedly taken to the Joseph N. France General Hospital where he is receiving treatment. He is reported to be in serious condition.

More information will be provided by this publication as it becomes available.

Meanwhile the Traffic Department is investigating an incident which occurred this afternoon at the junction of Wilkin Street and Horsfords Road at Fortlands involving an oil truck and a motor car.

SKNVibes understands that at about 12:15 p.m., the Delta oil truck – P1961 – was travelling down Wilkin Street when the motorcar – PA8526 – came out of the stop on the southern side of Horsfords Road and ran into the right side of the truck.

The truck – according to information released by the Traffic Department – was driven by Cleon Rey of Lime Kiln Project and the car was driven by Kelvin Kelly of Challengers.

Both vehicles sustained damage and no one was injured during the crash.
