Government to draft national culture policy

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DIRECTOR OF CULTURE Troy Mills has revealed that consideration is being given to the drafting of a National Culture Policy.

According to the Director, back in 2010/2011, work was carried out on such a proposal and a draft was submitted to the then government, but that is where it stopped.

He noted that following several meetings that were held in recent times, there are now steps in place to have a Trinidad and Tobago lecturer visit the Federation in February to review the draft proposal.

“He is going to be coming to have meetings with stakeholders and having some discussions to really ratify that draft,” Mills said.

Director Mills, an avid lover of culture, explained that over the last 15 years the Federation’s culture would have changed because it is working to incorporate tourism into it, as that sector is no longer seen dependent on sun, see and sand.

He stressed that tourism resonates with “the people, the heritage we have, the sites, the hospitality of the people, and the warmth and sharing”.

To this end, Mill suggested that by the third quarter of this year, it is expected that the draft policy would be submitted to the Minister so it can be taken to Cabinet for approval before it is laid before the National Assembly.

The new policy - when it comes to fruition –  would bring into focus “in detail what we as Kittitian people are really all about; what we should be looking at, what the people can expect from the government and what the government can expect from the people”.

This policy followed another that was being drafted last year that focused on youth and giving them an overarching voice within St. Kitts and Nevis.
