Social Studies Teachers benefit from workshop focusing on topic of government

By: EMU, Press Release

(EMU) – St. Kitts, January 26th 2017: Social Studies Teachers from schools in St Kitts and Nevis, recently participated in a workshop to assist them in better handling/conducting the sessions on the topic of Government in the classroom.  The workshop was held at the Curriculum Development Unit on Wednesday 25th January 2017.

Given the vital role government plays within our society it is equally mirrored in the Interim Curriculum for Social Studies, hence the necessity for the workshop. The scarcity of literature and resources for this topic is troubling (according to the Coordinator), however the workshop is just one way in which the Coordinator for Social Studies, Mrs. Sheryl Harris intends to resolve the situation.

Mrs. Harris states, “Government plays an integral part in the Interim Curriculum and it is important that teachers are apprised of the information so that going forward they’ll be able to plan activities based on the knowledge they would have acquired from this workshop.”

Participants absorbed information such as, a chronological overview of the Governmental system of the Federation with significant dates and events up to the present system.  Teachers were engaged in lively and interactive sessions throughout the day culminating with the creation of lesson plans for particular areas of Government.  Topics that were covered included the roles and responsibilities of different offices within the government; why it is important that we have one and how each sector of the government comes together to function productively.

Presenters for the workshop included Ms. Nisharma Rattan Mack and Mr. Azard Gumbs from the Crown Counsel and former Governor General Sir Probyn E. Inniss.

The presenters each lauded the Curriculum Development Unit for conducting this workshop as it necessary for students to know the importance of the role and function the Government and its offices play within society.

One of the aims of this workshop was to create a knowledge base for teachers, from individuals who know the content intimately. Ideally by doing so, the teachers would be able to convey the information seamlessly upon return to the classroom.
