Devrone’s willing and faithful chauffer

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ALTHOUGH Davrone Connor was blessed enough to have won a brand new car from KFC, his disability and his mother’s lack of a driver’s license meant that they would not have been able to drive the vehicle.

His sister however, has stepped up to the plate to assume the responsibility of being their chauffeur.

Taschena Powell-Woodley is Davrone’s older sister and she resides at New Road, St. Peter’s while her brother and her mother live in St. Paul’s.

Nonetheless, she has taken on the responsibility of chauffeuring them until her mother – Merlene Connor – secures her driver’s license.

On any given day, once she has to transport them to Basseterre, Taschena would have to travel more than 50 miles from the first leg of the commute to the last.

“I will be his driver for now, until Mommy gets her license. Over the years my mother would struggle with him taking him to school on her back and things like that. When I had my vehicle, I used to take them around or whenever I would drive my sister’s car I would take them around.

“But now that I’m the driver, I will be driving him around when I can, when I’m not working. That is until Mommy gets her license and then I will hand the car over to her.”

Taschena told SKNVibes that she is more than happy to provide this service for her mother and brother. She also said she is overjoyed about them winning the car and recalled the events that led to her finding out about it.

“When I finished work, I called Mommy and she said she was in the salon and that the draw had not been done as yet. So I told her I was going home because I was hungry. When I got home, as soon as I put down my bag to open the door, the phone rang so I answered and it was mommy. She said ‘come quick, come quick, we win the car’.

“She was saying all the time that the car is Devrone’s car. And I kept telling people to keep their eye off the car because it belongs to Devrone.”

She also recalled that when she got the news, her hunger subsided and she caught the next bus back into town.

Merlene is currently working on attaining her driver’s license but until she gets it, Taschena has no qualms acting as the designated and faithful chauffeur.
