BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A student of the Washington Archibald High School (WAHS) who was diagnosed with a kidney disease, received monetary assistance from a local non-profit organization which would be used to defray the cost of her medical expenses.

The student is Kyanna Pemberton and this morning (Feb. 6) at the school grounds, her parents Karen Pemberton and Jason Jarvis received a $3000 cheque from the Champs for Charity Foundation.

The charity was founded about a year ago by Chairperson Shirley Julius to provide monetary and other assistance to individuals across the Federation in the areas of health, education and socio-economic development.

SKNVibes understands that having been diagnosed earlier this year, Kyanna’s school sought assistance for her by raising funds and writing to the Champs for Charity Foundation.

In handing over the cheque to Kyanna and her parents, Julius informed the student body and staff of the WAHS of how and where she got her passion for giving back to others.

“I always say to persons that I grew up in a large family and my mother passed away when we were pretty young and we were raised by our grandmother. And she had always taught us to give back; no matter what, you have to give back. And so we formed this foundation…about a year ago and (it) is to try to help persons in our community.

“I once heard T. D. Jakes say it’s not what you leave for your children but what you leave in them. And so I am urging children this morning to stay in school, learn your lesson and try and give back because it is better to give than receive.”

Principal of the WAHS Sherise Dolphin-Gumbs thanked Champs for the donation and pledged her school’s continued effort in raising funds to assist the child.

Kyanna’s mother also thanked Champs for Charity for its timely donation.

“I too would like to say thank you to Champs for Charity for answering the plea of our Washington Archibald family. And I can assure you that this contribution will go a very long way in helping Kyanna. Thank you.”
