Let your light shine

By: Bertram Charles

    Scripture: Matthew 5: Verse 16

Nobody in a house lights a lamp or turns on the electric light only to cover or to hide it, but places it openly as to give light to all who need light. As children of God, we are like the light of the world. Instead of hiding our light we are to hold it before the world to let it shine so that they may see our good deeds and glorify our Father who is in heaven.

As light drives away darkness and enables men and women to see their way, we as believers, by our teaching and example, remove ignorance and prejudice and open the path to Jesus Christ who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life to the Father.

The Bible teaches that believers are to be harmless as doves. Harmless in our disposition, harmless in our conduct, harmless in conversation; doing no injury to any man’s person or property. We are to behave in a manner that will not offend anyone, Jew or Gentile. Believers live in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation like every succeeding age. We are like lilies in the valley liable to be trampled upon by the foot of every wild beast. We are like roses among thorns, to be scratched and torn. We are annoyed by the wickedness in the world. The ways of unbelievers are corrupt and their works are contrary to civil and divine laws. Accordingly, believers must shine as lights in this world.

This world is covered with darkness: the darkness of ignorance, profanity, superstition and witchcraft.  These men and women of darkness are children of the night. Their deeds are acts of darkness.  They walk in darkness not knowing where they are going.  They are not aware of the snares, pits, and traps they are in danger of falling into. They do not know that the paths of ignorance and darkness would lead them to self-hate, self-destruction and  sudden death  where there is weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth because their eyes were blinded.

We are the light of the world  like a city on a mountain glowing in the night for all to see. Let it shine for it is like a lamp to our feet, a light to our pathway and everyone will praise our heavenly Father.
