Education Ministry disapproves of prank to cancel school

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Ministry of Education has frowned upon and registered its disapproval of a message or messages which were circulating this morning (Feb. 21) on social media, suggesting that weather conditions had led to the cancellation of school.

This morning, SKNVibes understands, a frontal trough was over the north eastern Caribbean which was causing some wind and rain.

The Ministry issued two press releases today, one this morning indicating that it “has not authorised the cancellation of school today 21st February. The announcement that is being circulated via social media and otherwise indicating that school is cancelled is false”.

In its latest press release – issued sometime this afternoon, the Ministry “expressed displeasure with the dissemination of such inaccurate information by unauthorised individuals. It emphasized that such actions will not be tolerated as they can cause significant inconvenience and uncertainty for parents as well as delay and disruption in the school day”.

The release spoke of the Ministry’s disappointment in the dissemination of the inaccurate information and “urged that individuals be more responsible”.

“The decision to temporarily close schools is not taken lightly. It is made with the well-being and safety of our children and the concerns of parents in mind…In this case the MET Office has assured the Ministry that the present weather does not warrant the closure of school,” a representative of the Ministry of Education indicated, as quoted in the release.

As a means of remedying the situation and or guarding against a repeat of this incident, the Ministry is advising parents and guardians to “listen to official media houses regarding the operations of schools and if necessary, confirm with Ministry of Education Administrators where possible”.
