The Baptism of Jesus

By: Bertram Charles

    Scripture: Mark 1: Verse 10

One day while John the Baptist was preaching and baptizing a number of people, he baptized Jesus in the Jordon River. Immediately after Jesus was baptized a miracle occurred. The manifestation of the Holy Trinity was demonstrated right before the eyes of the crowd.
The heavens opened, the Holy Spirit like a dove descended on Jesus and a voice from heaven, said: “Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Firstly, the dove is noted for its purity and cleanness. The apostle Paul declares that the Spirit of God is a Spirit of holiness; It washes, sanctifies, justifies, converts, transforms sinners to saints and preserves believers in the way of truth and righteousness.  (1 Cor. 6: 11.)
The dove points out Jesus as a peacemaker. He brought peace on earth and goodwill to all.  (Luke 2: 14.) The dove indicates that Jesus the Son of man is simple, plain, humble, meek, lowly, gentle, sincere, truthful, innocent and harmless. We are duty-bound to imitate Jesus and follow Him in all of the characteristics of a dove.

Secondly, a voice came from heaven saying: “You are my beloved Son.” The Words were spoken to John the Baptist and the others for them to pay special attention, on whom the Spirit, in the form of a dove, descended on. It was divine testimony to all to verify how great Jesus is, His relationship to God the Father Almighty, the maker of heaven and earth, to express how much He is the object of His Father’s love, that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believe on Him should not perish but have eternal life.

Thirdly, the Son appeared in flesh in the presence of all, yielding obedience to the Will of His Father, fulfilling all righteousness and prophesies for His sacrificial offering for the remission of sin.

Jesus has prepared the way and He has promised that in His name and when we are filled with the Spirit, He will give us power to tread on serpents, scorpions, over all enemies and nothing shall hurt us.
