A typical sugar estate was segregated into different areas. The estate owner always occupied the largest home. The estate also comprised of the mill, the boiling and curing houses. These were typically surrounded by other smaller buildings and sheds where blacksmiths, wheelwrights, carpenters, masons, other artisans worked. Included on the estate were a hospital, a jail and storage rooms for tools and supplies and sheds that sheltered animals. The estate also comprised of residential houses for managers / overseers and slaves; however, the slave quarters were not within close vicinity to the homes of the managers.
