    Position: Research Technician (Full-time)

    About St. Kitts Biomedical Research Foundation

    The St. Kitts Biomedical Research Foundation (SKBRF) is a research organization devoted to advancing the development of therapies for human diseases and the application of related models of disease pathophysiology to drug and device evaluation. SKBRF applies extensive expertise in many areas of therapeutic and diagnostic research for which clinically relevant models are feasible, focusing on ophthalmic, central nervous system and metabolic research, as well as pharmacokinetic and safety studies.

    Job Summary

    The Research Technician performs research related procedures, assisting the Study Directors and Principal Investigators to execute routine study-specific research activities by following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and protocol-specified procedures. A Research Technician may assume the responsibilities of Project Lead on defined studies, as designated by the Director of Research Operations. Otherwise the Research Technician functions as a study participant on any given study, playing a supportive and quality control role in ensuring that scientific and operational steps defined within the Study Protocol and Study Execution Plan are followed.

    The Research Technician reports to the Director of Research Operations, and the Study Director of any project to which they are assigned. Research Technician may simultaneously serve as a study participant on other studies, in which case they report to the Study Director of that study as well.

    Essential Job Responsibilities

    The Research Technician is responsible for supporting study execution and ensuring the completion of all assigned research activities defined by the Director of Research Operations and/or project management systems employed for the given research studies. The following specific activities are the responsibility of the Research Technician to ensure completion of studies according to study protocols and facility SOPs:

    1. Fulfill the following operational responsibilities, as well as others identified and agreed upon through direct communication with Senior Management, including:

    a. Perform routine research tasks per study protocol and/or SOP.

    b. Assist the Study Directors and Principal Investigators to perform routine study-specific research activities for which adequate training has been received.

    c. Tabulate and report study data to the Study Director, Principle Investigator, or Facility Director as guided by the Project Lead and/or Director of Research Operations.

    d. Perform quality control on recorded data and documentation of procedure execution.

    e. Perform and document routine laboratory maintenance.

    f. Restock research areas with routine supplies from the inventory and properly document supply requisition.

    g. Observes animals for signs of illness, injury, or unusual behavior; notifying veterinarians or managers as warranted.

    h. Feed, dose, observe and treat of animals.

    i. Treat animal illnesses or injuries, under veterinary supervision.

    j. Transport animals to/from research locations and new enclosures.

    k. Cleaning and maintain research spaces and animal procedure and housing environments as required.

    l. Conduct cage and animal enclosure sterilization effectiveness testing and surveillance.

    m. Perform biological sample shipment preparation as guided by the Project Lead and/or the Director of Research Operations.

    n. Contribute to maintenance of training records by ensuring that training that is participated in is documented.

    o. Follow work schedules prepared by the Director of Research Operations.

    p. Confer with supervision to understand work expectations, conditions of equipment and supplies, and schedules.

    q. Other duties as assigned.

    2. Fulfill the following compliance responsibilities, as well as others identified and agreed upon through direct communication with Senior Management, including:

    a. Comply with Good Laboratory Practices.

    b. Ensure compliance with facility SOPs and contribute to their maintenance to ensure that the facility continues to operate in compliance with the US Guide for the Use of Animals in Research and AAALAC standards, and those of the FDA and EMA.

    c. Comply with Occupational Health and Safety guidelines, such as the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment.

    3. Fulfill the following career and facility development responsibilities, as well as others identified and agreed upon through direct communication with Senior Management, including:

    a. Work with Director of Research Operations to ensure, by providing appropriate feedback, that training opportunities are adequate to gain proficiency and understanding of research activities critical to fulfilling the above-specified responsibilities.

    b. Attend staff meetings and participate in other organizational dialogue that advances professional development and the facility’s research and operational objectives.

    Qualifications:

    1. Education level

    · Bachelor’s or Associate degree with 1 year experience or 2 years relevant experience.

    2. Experience

    · 1 - 4 years relevant experience (e.g., research assistant or similar)

    3. Specific competencies

    · Basic laboratory techniques, including proficiency in aseptic techniques, pipetting, use of scales and balances, significant figures, and good laboratory practice (GLP) documentation procedures.

    · Computer literacy skills: Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

    · Attention to detail to ensure data and time/date recording accuracy.

    · Teamwork and clear, efficient, and timely communicating.

    · Critical thinking to identify problems and contribute to appropriate conclusions and solutions.
