JOB TITLE: Library Assistant

REPORTS TO: Director of Library & Educational Applications
The University of Medicine and Health Sciences is seeking to employ a dedicated and customer focused individual for the available position of Library Assistant.
POSITION SUMMARY
Library Assistants have overall responsibility for the smooth and efficient functioning of the Library during their shift. They are expected to work responsibly and independently, to exercise good judgment and initiative, and provide quality library services to the students, faculty, community partners and staff of UMHS. Candidate must be flexible to work all library shifts, including daytime, evenings and weekends. Library is open from 7am - 11pm Mon-Fri, and from 10am-10 pm or 8am - 11pm Saturday and Sunday. Shift patterns and Library opening hours may vary during the Academic Term and according to operational requirements; Flexibility in scheduling is therefore essential.
Responsible for assisting in maintaining an orderly, welcoming and appropriate study environment within the Library. Particularly as the successful candidate may be working independently during evening and weekend shifts.
THIS POSITION HAS PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WILL INCLUDE;
1. Rostered circulation desk duties and assisting customers with self-serve technology
2. Assists with processing of incoming materials as assigned
3. Preparing books and journals for shelving and circulation.
4. Refers information technology problems to IT staff in a timely manner
5. Knowledge of medical and library resources, hardware and software programs
6. Use of databases and other technology for a range of processing and service tasks
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
1. Associates or Bachelor’s degree, or completion of a two-year college diploma in Library and Information Technology is preferred
2. Or Minimum of five CXC O Levels inclusive of (English) required
3. Experience in a Library, Office and or Medical field experience would be an asset.
4. Knowledge and search experience of medical and library databases and terminology would be an asset. Library functions, operations, processes, techniques and procedures.
5. Intermediate computing, database and internet knowledge and searching skills.
6. Superior communication interpersonal skills to serve a diverse, multicultural clientele.
7. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
8. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team
9. Display strong attention to details and enthusiasm for providing Library Services
10. Competency with Microsoft Office products
11. Experience with Library Management Software and information resource database functionality
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Knowledge and experience using library technology applications
- Skill in basic literature searching using Pub Med/Medline, EBSCO databases, Access Medicine
- Knowledge & experience using & maintaining Library World or other Library Management System.
- Knowledge and experience using Learning Management Systems, Education Instructional Software, and other medical education databases, OR have the capacity and willingness to learn these products.
- Knowledge of medical terminology is an asset
- Experience supporting users with electronic resources, online databases or educational technologies
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Providing basic reference support.
- Participation in the marketing & promotion of the Library, library resources, UMHS Educational Applications, & UMHS LMS.
- Providing basic training and assistance to students, faculty, instructors, and preceptors, on navigating and utilizing the library resources, databases, and educational applications.
- Routine circulation functions, including issuing and returning materials
- Assisting users with library accounts
- Maintaining accurate circulation records
