The St. Kitts Biomedical Research Foundation (SKBRF) is a research organization devoted to advancing the development of therapies for human diseases and the application of related models of disease pathophysiology to drug and device evaluation. SKBRF applies extensive expertise in many areas of therapeutic and diagnostic research for which clinically relevant models are feasible, with a focus on ophthalmic, central nervous system and metabolic research, as well as pharmacokinetic and safety studies.
Job Summary
The Animal Care Assistant is responsible for ensuring the completion of all assigned animal care activities defined by the Animal Care Supervisor or Department Head.
The Animal Care Assistant performs animal care and research related procedures, assisting the Animal Care Supervisor, Department Head, and the rest of the Animal Care team to execute routine study-specific and non-study-specific animal care activities by following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and protocol-specified procedures.
Essential Job Responsibilities
• Animal Care:
- Perform routine animal care tasks such as feeding and routine health monitoring as defined by the Animal Use Protocols and SOPs, and ensure food and water availability to animals and monitor consumption.
- Observe animals for signs of illness, injury, or unusual behavior, notifying the Animal Care Supervisor and Facility Veterinarian.
- Assist other staff with technical functions such as routine health care and treatments and record animal information per SOP and/or specified protocols.
• Operational:
- Ensure that assigned buildings, enclosures, and cages are cleaned appropriately by daily hose wash down in accordance with the cleaning schedule and SOPs.
- Ensure that animals receive appropriate feed and all animals have access to feed and water.
• Follow work schedules prepared by the Animal Care Supervisor and Department Head and start and complete work in a timely manner.
• Complete required training in a timely manner and ensure training is documented.
• Comply with the documentation standards of Good Laboratory Practices and adhere to all study protocols, SOPs, company procedures and policies.
Qualifications
1. Education level/Certifications/Licensures:
· High school diploma, General Education Degree (G.E.D.) or equivalent required
2. Experience:
a) At least 6 months of relevant animal care experience, working with livestock or other animals.
· Ability to perform duties and responsibilities with minimal supervision.
· Good technology skills and willingness to learn.
3) Specific competencies:
• Ability to effectively follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit interpersonal skills that are conducive to effective communication and that contribute to a congenial work environment.
