National Disaster Mitigation Sub-Committees meet ahead of upcoming Hurricane Season

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) began the 2022 National Disaster Sub Committees’ Meetings with the first of these being held on Tuesday 15th February 2022 at NEMA’s Conference room.

The goal of the meeting was two-fold: (1) to review the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) mandate; and (2)to provide guidance to the Mitigation Council ahead of the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season.

Several ministries and departments were represented at this meeting, largely via attendance by permanent secretaries and directors. Each representative outlined and discussed their organisation’s individual challenges. Various recommendations, ideas and suggestions on the way forward for 2022 were also discussed in detail.

The meeting was chaired by the National Disaster Co-ordinator (NDC) and Chair of the National COVID-19 Task Force, Mr. Abdias Samuel. Also in attendance were the Chairman and Co-Chair of the National Disaster Mitigation Council, namely, the Hon. Attorney General, Mr. Vincent Byron Jr; and the Hon Wendy Phipps, Minister of International Trade, et al, respectively. Both Ministers also share oversight responsibility for the National COVID-19 Task Force.

Mr. Samuel reminded all in attendance of the importance of their commitment to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, particularly as it relates to disaster preparedness, mitigation and risk reduction.
