Comment: I believe we've just taken our last trip to St. Kitts. We have been going for several years and have seen a slow but steady decline in how travelers are treated. The recent story on how a white American was dealt with for having an old, non-functional gun- that was licensed- compared to how St. Kitts sentenced black men with functional, unlicensed guns (plural) and drugs really brought the growing racism to our attention. The young black man was given 6 mos, the white man 6 years. I'm keeping my travel money in countries that won't try to "stick it to me" because my skin is a different color.
We've seen this treatment, to a lesser extent, in restaurants, markets, and on beaches, but these are passing moments of rudeness. The unequal prison sentences are unacceptable and a pure civil rights violation. |
