Comment:
I do appreciate hearing the voice of Kittitian youth. While I commend the responsible sexual decisions of ‘a voice’, I disagree with this young person’s perspective on the law. The law would not disadvantage men at all. Children, 18 years old and under, do not have the capacity to fully consent to sex. Adults do. If an adult engages in sexual activity with a minor, they deserve to be put into jail.
“A voice” raises a good point about the effectiveness of the law. These concerns are real and pertain more to the enforcement of the law and not the law itself. After the law is passed, several administrative steps must be taken. Personnel in several fields, for example child welfare and the police, must be trained and encouraged to enforce the law.
